How to Install WPC Decking – A Professional’s Guide to a Flawless Finish
NewYongTech supplies premium WPC decking boards to contractors, developers, and distributors worldwide.

NewYongTech supplies premium WPC decking boards to contractors, developers, and distributors worldwide. While our composite decking is engineered for durability and low maintenance, the quality of the finished deck depends heavily on correct installation. This guide walks you through the complete installation process — from substructure preparation to the final trim — based on industry best practices used by leading manufacturers .
Before You Start: Essential Planning
Check Your Substructure
Before laying a single board, inspect the joist framework. Composite decking requires a stable, level, and well-supported substructure. The joists must be:
Even and level – Shim or shave any uneven joists to create a flat plane
Correctly spaced – Standard recommendation is joist centres of 300–400mm for residential applications ; for commercial projects or diagonal layouts, tighten to 250mm–300mm
Protected against moisture – Apply joist tape (such as Trex Protect® tape) over the top of all joists to prevent water ingress and extend the life of the substructure
-
Prepare the Site
Ensure the ground is clean, level, and free of debris. For ground-level decks, incorporate a 1% slope away from buildings to aid drainage . Never install over an uneven or poorly drained surface.

Step-by-Step Installation Process
Step 1: Install the Starter Board
Begin at the outside edge of your deck frame.
Attach starter clips to the outer joist at every joist intersection
Secure each clip with the provided screws – pre-drill to avoid splitting the joist
Align the grooved channel of your first WPC decking board with the starter clips and press firmly into place
Pro Tip: The starter board must be fixed flush and square – it sets the reference line for every subsequent board.
Step 2: Lay the Field Boards Using Hidden Fasteners
For the remaining boards, use intermediate clips (metal or plastic) at every joist intersection :
Insert the pronged side of the clip into the exposed groove of the installed board
Secure the clip to the joist through the counter-sunk hole – only one screw is needed per clip; the other holes allow for drainage
Align the next board’s groove with the clip and click it into place
Repeat across the entire deck area
Important: Hidden fasteners rely on consistent framing. If joists are uneven, boards may wander or leave inconsistent gaps . Ensure your joist alignment is accurate before starting.
Step 3: Maintain Proper Spacing
WPC boards expand and contract with temperature changes. Correct spacing is essential:
Side gaps – Maintain a consistent gap between boards (typically 3mm–6mm), determined by the clip system
End gaps – Leave a 3mm–6mm gap where boards meet endtoend to allow for thermal expansion
Perimeter clearances – Leave 8mm–10mm clearance at walls, posts, and fixed structures
The installation temperature affects gap size — install on cooler days to allow for summer expansion.
Step 4: Install the Final Board and Perimeter Edges
For the final board:
Click its grooved edge into the last row of clips
If the outer edge is accessible, pre-drill an oversized pilot hole at a 45° angle into the grooved channel and screw directly into the joist at 300mm intervals
If the grooved channel is not accessible, screw directly through the top of the board, using oversized pilot holes to avoid splitting
Then:
Install fascia boards or trim boards around the deck perimeter for a clean, professional finish
Pre-drill all trim fixings and allow a 2mm gap between trim ends for expansion
Trim the connecting ends of end covers at a 45° angle for seamless joins
Step 5: Stair and Border Installation (If Applicable)
For stair treads, ensure stringer spacing is appropriately tight – composite treads often require closer support than timber
For picture-frame borders, install extra joists beneath the perimeter to provide adequate support
Face Screwing vs. Hidden Fasteners – When to Use Which
Method | When to Use | Key Considerations |
Hidden fasteners | Main field of deck, for a clean, screw-free finish | Requires grooved boards and accurate joist alignment |
Face screwing | Starter boards, final boards, stair treads, narrow infill pieces, and fascia | Use manufacturerapproved colourmatched screws; predrill oversized pilot holes |
Even when using hidden fasteners, face screws are often needed in specific areas — a proper installation frequently uses a mix of both methods .
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake | Consequence | Prevention |
Ignoring expansion gaps | Boards buckle or lift in summer heat | Follow manufacturer gap recommendations based on installation temperature |
Poor joist alignment | Boards wander or show inconsistent seams | Check framing accuracy before installing clips |
Skipping joist tape | Moisture penetrates the substructure, leading to rot | Apply joist tape to all joist tops before laying boards |
Over-tightening clips | Board edges may mushroom or stress | Follow torque specifications and use depth-setting tools |
Inadequate perimeter clearance | Water and debris trapped against walls/posts | Maintain 8mm–10mm clearance at fixed structures |
Safety First
When installing WPC decking:
Wear safety glasses, gloves, and reinforced-toe footwear
Use a dust mask when cutting boards
Work with a partner for long boards and heavy lifting
Keep a first aid kit on site
